I realise I'm entering new ground here on the blog... but I figured I've told quite a few stories of where I've been and what I've been up to along the way, so its time to branch out a bit... and book reviews seemed an obvious direction!
You get a lot of time to read when you are travelling around the world and sitting on the beach... Oh, not having a job helps too...
Having said that I've actually only read 4 books! And I've been away 4 months! Maybe I'm a bit S - L - O - W... I think I probably am! = )
I've just finished reading Yes Man by Danny Wallace. Its brilliant! Danny is absolutely hilarious! BE WARNED - This is the kind of book that makes you laugh out loud when you are reading it on the bus/plane/ferry/train so you look like a right muppet! I loved it, It is one of the funniest books I have ever read and so comes highly recommended...! I'm saying "Yes" to everything now too!
"Wanna go for a pint?" - "Yes!"
"Wanna go for a surf?" - "Yes!"
"Wanna go to a BBQ?" - "Yes!"
"Wanna go to the open air cinema to watch a film about aboriginal people called 10 Canoes?" - "Yes" (by the way that's what I did last night, was pretty cool...!)
"Si A Todo!" its the only way to be!
All of that probably makes no sense whatsoever if you haven't read the book! Take my advice - read it - its class!
OVERALL RATING: 9 / 10
Okay next book to be considered is Damage Done by Warren Fellows.
This is a true story about an Aussie guy called Warren who was a bit unlucky/naughty and got caught trafficking drugs (heroin no less) in Thailand.
He actually got sentenced to death but was locked up in Bangkok Prison (also known as the Bangkok Hilton) for 12 years...
The book tells the story of the ordeal he went through in prison and the torture etc that went on. Its pretty bad!
Good book though, very interesting. I'm not sure how true the part is at the beginning where he kind of makes himself out to be a hero (could be true I guess) but its a good book all the same. Definitely recommended if you have been, or plan to go, to Thailand.
OVERALL RATING: 7 / 10
Okay, the next book review is of Life of Pi by Yann Martel.
I'm gong to keep this one fairly brief... DON'T BOTHER READING THIS BOOK!!! ITS RUBBISH!!!
The beginning bit is quite interesting but then he gets in the boat and it just meanders on for ages and ages and nothing really happens and its sooooooooooo boring! And then the twist at the end is really stupid, in my opinion.
I didn't like it at all. No idea why it won the Booker Prize its duff.
OVERALL RATING: 0 / 10
The last of the 4 books I have read recently is White Teeth by Zadie Smith.
This book is awesome! I love the way it is written and the characters are so cool and true to life! Its really funny too. The dialogue is superb, there are some brilliant conversations between Archie and Samed and particularly between Millat and all his friends. A superb book!
OVERALL RATING: 9 / 10
Ok so that's it for the book reviews at this time, maybe there will be some more to come in the future if I can speed my reading pace up a bit!
Cant see that happening though as I start work next week so will have even less reading time!
